Business loan requirements in Canada
Reviewed September 30, 2026 · Canada Business Loan editorial team
Requirements depend on the provider, product and business. There is no single Canadian business-loan checklist that guarantees approval.
Canada Business Loan is a marketplace/referral platform, not a lender. Providers determine eligibility, approval, pricing and terms. No approval, funding or timing is guaranteed.
Prepare the request before collecting documents
Write down the amount needed, purpose, deadline and repayment plan. Explain why the requested amount matches the actual funding gap. Revenue is not the same as money available to service debt. Include operating expenses, taxes, existing financing and slower-than-expected receipts in the discussion.
The preparation suggestions below are CBL’s educational checklist. They are not published underwriting requirements for every lender. Confirm the specific provider’s current document request before sharing personal or financial records.
| Area | Prepare | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Business identity | Registration details, ownership and authorized contact | Confirm the provider’s identity checks and secure document channel. |
| Funding request | Itemized use of funds, supplier quotes or transaction budget | Separate one-time purchases from recurring operating needs. |
| Repayment plan | Cash-flow forecast and a downside scenario | Show cash available after operating expenses and existing obligations. |
| Trading records | Financial statements, bank records and current management information | Ask which periods and formats are actually required. |
| Existing obligations | Debt balances, payment schedules and guarantees | Include daily or weekly payments as well as monthly obligations. |
| Product-specific evidence | Equipment quote, receivable aging or acquisition documents | The relevant records depend on the structure being investigated. |
How the product changes the conversation
A defined purchase, a recurring cash-flow gap and unpaid customer invoices create different financing questions. Product mechanics explain why different evidence may be useful; they do not establish approval.
- Equipment financing: prepare the quote, intended business use and ownership discussion. Compare a purchase loan with a lease, including end-of-agreement obligations.
- Invoice factoring: prepare a receivable list and ask about customer payment, collections, reserves and recourse. A sale of receivables differs from a loan.
- Line of credit: explain the recurring gap and how drawings are expected to be repaid. Ask about fees, renewal, reporting and conditions affecting availability.
- Business acquisition: separate the buyer’s contribution, purchase price, transaction costs and post-acquisition working capital. Discuss transaction records with the financing provider and professional advisors.
Credit, revenue and time in business
Do not assume a search result’s minimum credit score or revenue applies to every product. Ask whether the provider evaluates business credit, personal credit or both, whether an inquiry is required, and how existing obligations are considered. A provider’s published minimum is not an assurance that an application will be accepted.
For a startup, prepare a plan and realistic forecast rather than presenting projections as established sales. ISED’s CSBFP overview includes eligible startups, subject to programme scope and the financial institution’s financing decision. CBL cannot approve a CSBFP application or replace that assessment.
Before sharing information or accepting an offer
Verify the recipient and use the designated secure channel. Read the consent explanation, including purposes and recipients. Ask for the written agreement and review payment frequency, net proceeds, total cost, security, guarantees and early repayment provisions. Obtain qualified advice when material commitments or guarantees are involved.
CBL’s educational tools do not require identity or banking documents. Its optional qualification journey requests consent before an enquiry is submitted. Do not place sensitive documents or application details in public AI conversations.
